ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I knew that I wanted to be an artist from the time that I was a young boy. I loved to draw and paint and was always inventing and building things. I went on to study art at Pratt Institute and after graduation worked as an Art Director at major advertising agencies in New York. I later worked as a graphic designer in packaging and printed matter.
This background was essential to my making of sculpture because it enabled me to combine vision, creativity, and the understanding of form with skill and precision. I have always loved making things and dealing with the challenge of making a piece of material come alive and assume another presence. It is the process of creating that I enjoy the most.
I like the challenge of designing and building a sculpture that is unique. I begin the process by first making thumbnail sketches of my ideas. These ideas are at times informed by fragments of things that I have seen, the material itself or are about relationships of form to the environment. I then select the design that pleases me; make a final drawing and build a maquette to scale. From there I begin the work of creating the actual sculpture. I make adjustments to the initial idea, if it calls for it. I never tire of the thrill of seeing the sculpture take form – of taking the vision and making it come alive.
